Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), commonly known as Florida A&M, is a public historically black land-grant university in Tallahassee, Florida. Founded in 1887, It is the third largest historically black university in the United States by enrollment and the only public historically black university in Florida. It is a member institution of the State University System of Florida, as well as one of the state's land grant universities, and is accredited to award baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. FAMU sports teams are known as the Rattlers, and compete in Division I of the NCAA. They are a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). FAMU values diversity in thought, perspective, and culture. The University enrolls nearly 10,000 students hailing from across the United States and more than 70 countries, including several African countries, the Caribbean, the Gulf region, Latin America, to name a few. The student body includes representatives from all ethnic, socio-economic, and religious backgrounds. FAMU’s main campus has 156 buildings spread over 422 acres atop the highest of Tallahassee’s seven hills. The University also has several satellite campuses, including the College of Law located in Orlando, Florida, pharmacy programs in Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, as well as the recently acquired Brooksville Agricultural Research Station.
